August marks Cataracts Awareness Month

Cataracts are one of the most pervasive eye health conditions throughout much of the world, and although many people associate the affliction with older adults, optometrists advise that young people can benefit from taking steps to prevent the condition from developing later in life. August is Cataracts Awareness Month, so many eye care specialists are focusing on the issue, the Hattiesburg American reports.

The American Optometric Association suggests that, along with donning eyewear that offers sufficient UV protection, individuals can take other steps to avoid developing cataracts. Eating lots of antioxidant-rich foods, like leafy green vegetables and fruits, has been shown to benefit vision.

Taking care of one's overall health will result in better vision as well. Exercising, limiting sugar intake and not smoking will all minimize the risk of developing cataracts.

Cataracts can present themselves through symptoms such as blurry vision, faded colors and glare. The National Eye Institute reports that half of all people have either developed cataracts or had corrective surgery by the time they reach 80, and recommends that individuals over 60 have a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once every two years.
