Computer Vision Syndrome causing increased instances of nearsightedness in youth

While the advent of technology has certainly made life easier in many ways, Voice of America News reports that using devices such as computers, e-books and smart phones can lead to a condition known as Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS).

The news source reports that unlike other eye health issues, such as glaucoma or presbyopia, this condition is is caused primarily by strain on the eyes. Eye care specialists also say that CVS is troubling because it can affect the learning of school-age children who may be spending hours a day in front of computer screens.

"We are finding now more and more children are becoming nearsighted," optometrist Dr Michael Duenas told the news outlet, "because of the excessive close work on hand held devices."

However, there are several ways to remedy the progression of CVS. Dr Rachel Bishop told the news provider that the there are specially made eyeglasses that adjust to the distance a computer screen typically sits from one's eyes.

The American Optometric Association reports that between 50 and 90 percent of people who work with video display terminals, such as computers, suffer from CVS.
