Eating certain foods can help protect eyes from sun damage
Many people know that a healthy diet can result in many benefits for their body, but when it comes to eyesight they may be less aware of the advantages of eating well. The Toronto Sun reports that knowing about eye-friendly nutrients can help one significantly improve one's vision.
According to the news source, a combination of vitamin C, vitamin E and carotene help protect the eyes from harsh elements.
"What attacks the eye from the outside is the light, but what protects it is what’s inside - in the inter-ocular fluid and even in the makeup of the cornea, all of which are affected by what’s in your diet," analytical chemist Gary Leong told the news provider.
The news outlet reports that optometrists recommend eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day, with dark green, leafy varieties being especially effective. Additionally, blueberries have been shown to improve night vision, and Leong added that egg yolks and safflower oil have been shown to provide protection from UV rays.
AllAboutVision.com reports that, along with protecting eyes from harm, these vitamins and nutrients have also been shown to slow the process of age-related macular degeneration.
