Healthy diet can prevent vision loss
Age related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the United States, with the Center for Disease control estimating about 1.8 million people have the disease. However, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, there are a number of ways to prevent the condition from forming.
The news source reports that new research has found that there are certain foods that can play an integral role in maintaining eye health. Ingesting raised amounts of Vitamin C, E and A are all proven ways to delay, or stop, the onset of AMD.
"AMD is a complicated scenario. The interaction of a number of genes and lifestyle factors may come into play," Dr Emily Chew told the news provider.
Other nutrients that are good for the eyes are lutein and zeaxanthin, which can be found in foods like kale, spinach and corn.
According to the American Optometric Association, there are other factors that can reduce one's risk of developing AMD. Along with a eating the right foods, experts suggest wearing sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of UV rays.
