Prolonged computer use can damage eye health

Whether someone is a student or in the professional world, it is becoming difficult to avoid using computers for significant time during the day. While they certainly are among the most useful tools at our disposal, according to Business Day, prolonged use can be detrimental to eye health.

Computer Vision Syndrome (CVS) is a type of eye strain that occurs when eye muscles become overworked, which can happen when they are focused on one thing for too long. The condition can cause headaches, dizziness, blurred vision and may even result in nearsightedness, requiring corrective eyewear.

"Eye strain occurs when the eyes are overused and the muscles made extremely weak in the process. Its effects vary from person to person. Those with very sensitive eyes may develop severe problems when there is a long history of strain, while for those with tough eyes, the effect may just be irritation and discomfort," optician Muyiwa Ajayi told the news source

The American Optometric Association recommends several different options for combating CVS. Although there is prescription eyewear especially for working on computer, other methods of prevention include taking 15 minute breaks every two hours and making sure the screen is 20 to 28 inches away from the eyes.ADNFCR-3386-ID-19900054-ADNFCR
