Proper eyewear demands more than style

Although many people choose their eyewear based on whether or not it's fashionable, according to GoUpState.com, ignoring other important aspects of eyeglasses and prescription sunglasses may be more dangerous than people think.

While stylish sunglasses have their benefits, there are more factors one needs to take into consideration, such as whether or not the frames are polarized or if they offer 100 percent UV protection.

"The fashion frames are good, but the main thing is to get the right lens," South Carolina Optician Jan Standard told the news source.

Experts suggest choosing a style of eyewear that will match your lifestyle. For example, avid fishermen should look for polarized lenses, since the shades will protect their eyes from the harsh glare off the water.

For others, the American Optometric Association recommends selecting sunglasses that block out 99 to 100 percent of UV rays as well as 75 to 90 percent of visible light. The organization also also suggests discussing proper protection from the sun during eye exams.

"A lot of people don't realize you should go to the eye doctor for more than just seeing if you need glasses," optician Brandi Rowe told the news provider.ADNFCR-3386-ID-19896586-ADNFCR
