Simple tests can expose potential eyesight problems
While the obvious signs that a child is sick are well known by most parents, the symptoms of a potential vision problem may be more difficult to spot. According to The Record Searchlight, there are several easy-to-administer tests that can give parents an idea as to whether or not their kids need to see an eye care specialist.
The news source reports that different tests can be used depending on the age of the child. For elementary school-aged children, experts recommend that parents casually ask their youngster to call out colors, primarily red and green. Additionally, while in the car they can be asked to read stop signs, license plates and other objects to determine whether or not they have trouble seeing far away objects.
While high school students will be less inclined to participate in such light-hearted games, there are still ways to assess their eyesight. The news outlet suggests asking them to read the time on the cable box or DVD player from far away.
Those who may be concerned that their child has a vision problem should ensure that they schedule a comprehensive eye exam. The American Optometric Association recommends that school age children receive an eye exam at least once every other year.
