Women more aware of methods to protect eyes from sun than men

Men and women certainly have differing views when it comes to many things, and results of a new survey indicate that the disagreement extends to eye and vision health as well. The study, which was conducted by the American Optometric Association (AOA), found that more women know the importance of UV protection, while more men can correctly identify which food is best for eye health.

Protecting one's eyes from the sun is one of the most important parts of eye care, and 35 percent of female respondents said they made it a priority. Only 28 percent of men felt the same way.

"The ladies win in this case; you should always look for sunglasses that offer good protection, blocking 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation and screening out 75 to 90 percent of visible light," said eye care specialist Dr Mark Helgeson.

Although they were unable to identify the importance of UV protection, the AOA found that 14 percent of men, compared to 11 percent of women, believe that spinach can effectively improve vision.

AllAboutVision.com reports that along with spinach, eating foods such as sweet potatoes, carrots and butternut squash can benefit eye health.
